CASTILLEJOS

The Castillejos route requires a high level of fitness as it begins in La Herradura, ascends the Cerro Gordo, passes along the N-340, and then turns in the direction of Castillejos. The route gets its name from the rock formations that can be seen at the top of the mountain throughout the ascent. These formations appear very much like natural castles that sit high aloft the valleys below. As the route winds its way through the valley, one can admire the many views of the sea as well as the local agriculture. Upon the final ascent, there is a commanding view of the route itself as well as the sea beyond the valley. Reaching the crossroads at the top is a great place to stop and enjoy a snack, as well as enjoy views of both the route that was ascended and of the valley on the other side of the mountain. From here, the route ascends juts a bit more before descending downward in the direction of the sea. The descent brings one just north of La Herradura and then continues through Cerro Gordo and ends in La Herradura by the sea.

ZAHONADO

The Zahonado route is perfect for anyone who wants to get a great sense of the unique character and history of Almunecar. The route starts in Almunecar and immediately heads north in the direction of Torrecueva. Along this route, there is an appreciation of the sub tropic climate and the abundance of agriculture that is found in this area. The trail borders the vega (orchard) with its seemingly endless amount of chirimoya trees and passes part of the Roman aqueduct that has large sections that still stand proud today. The trail also gives one views of the mountains that lay due north as well as of Almunecar itself to the south. It is here that one can see Almunecar’s whitewashed old town and castle which stand atop a small hill overlooking the majestic Mediterranean Sea. The second half of the trail descends through the Rio Verde with its dry riverbed and through more of the vega and brings one back into Almunecar completing the journey.
